Walking and running track information
The Te Rerenga Tunnel Walk is the most popular walking and running route. See below for further detail.
The Te Rerenga Tunnel Track is a 3km loop track, starting from the Arrival Centre car park. This passes through a 60m tunnel under Pyes Pa Road (SH36), along with bridges and stairs, looping back to the Arrival Centre via the Pyes Pa Road (SH36) underpass. A torch and sturdy shoes are required, as the tunnel floor is uneven. The tunnel was dug in the early 1930's using a pick, shovel and wheel barrow. It is believed that the tunnel was dug to deviate the Te Rerenga Stream beneath the new highway, taking approximately three years to complete. Glow worms can often be found inside the tunnel, located at approximately the half way mark. The tunnel track takes approximately one hour to walk. please note that the glow worms do not like too much noise!
The Lost Tank Track is a 1km return, flat native bush track, located near the mountain bike car park.
Equestrian tracks can also be used for walking and running. Please take care and respect the rights of other track users.
Mountain Bike Tracks
The Buffalo Girl Track is a 10km return, intermediate to advanced dirt track, primarily designed for mountain biking. This can also be used for walking and running. Please take care and respect the rights of other track users. It is best that walkers and runners avoid the Uno and Mickey Mouse Track.
